The Ruffled Panties reinterpret the romantic frivolity of antique undergarments through Catholic Guilt’s distinctive language of sculptural chainmail, transforming traditional lingerie into an object of wearable art.
Meticulously handcrafted from stainless steel using Catholic Guilt’s proprietary weaving techniques, the piece features an intricate, densely woven chainmail construction, interrupted by sculptural ruffles that appear to ripple and fold like delicate fabric. Each metallic frill is individually formed, creating the illusion of soft, gathered lace in a material that possesses none of its inherent fragility.
Drawing upon the visual language of Victorian undergarments, historical corsetry and ceremonial dress, the piece explores the relationship between modesty and exposure, vulnerability and protection. The familiar silhouette of feminine lingerie is reimagined as a form of intimate armour, simultaneously concealing and revealing the body beneath.
Neither entirely underwear nor armour, the Ruffled Panties exist somewhere between a precious antique, an anatomical sculpture and a relic of a forgotten civilisation.
